Safe sex

Safe sex is about protecting yourself and your partners from sexually transmitted diseases and unwanted pregnancy. Safe sex helps you stay healthy and can even make sex better. Condoms are a contraceptive made from latex rubber, a synthetic rubber called polyisoprene, a very thin plastic called polyurethane, or a synthetic material called nitrile. During sex, you wear a condom on your penis to prevent sperm from entering your partner's body when you ejaculate. Sperm can transmit STIs and if it enters a vagina, there is a chance it could lead to pregnancy. Using a condom can prevent this. The condom should be put on when your penis is hard and before it comes into contact with your partner's body.

Sexually transmitted diseases

Condoms are the best way to protect yourself and your partner from sexually transmitted diseases, also known as STDs. Condoms can only prevent the spread of STDs such as human papillomavirus (HPV, genital or venereal warts) or genital herpes if the condom covers the infected areas or sores. Condoms are the only way to reduce the risk of pregnancy, STDs, and HIV. Birth control pills, the contraceptive patch, birth control injections such as Depo-Provera, intrauterine devices (IUDs), diaphragms, and contraceptive methods other than condoms do not protect against STDs and HIV.

Unwanted pregnancy

Condoms are the best way to protect yourself from unwanted pregnancy. If you use condoms correctly during vaginal sex, there is very little chance of pregnancy - but it is still possible. No method of contraception is 100% effective at preventing pregnancy. The good news is that there are things you can do to make your condoms as safe as possible. First, you need to use condoms correctly. If you don’t use condoms correctly, it can make it easier for sperm to enter your vagina, putting you at greater risk of pregnancy. It is important to use condoms every time you have vaginal sex, from start to finish. If you only use condoms occasionally, or put them on halfway through sex, they will not be as effective.
